On Drones, Japan Ahead of Us Again

It was about 20 years ago I watched Patlabor for the first time. An animated series about a detachment of police unit armed with two police piloted robots created to combat robot crime. It’s a fun show set in rather a gloomy alternate universe Tokyo.

Life imitates arts.

Proliferation of drone technology gave rise to conflict from peoples expecting privacy or government enforcing no fly zones. The premise of police using exact same technology to use against the crime they fight came to life as Tokyo Police made a special drone squad to enforce no-fly zones.

But of coursh, the don’t use guns or lasers. They use net to immobilize and catch drones.
